Troubleshooting Solar Car Roof Lights: Smart Sensor and Remote Control FAQ
Troubleshoot a solar car roof light from the pack outward. If the unit is empty, sensors and the remote will look broken. Charge on sun or Type-C, wipe the solar face and the light sensor, then test in true darkness. Night movement should flash. Parking should go dark after about 20 seconds. Remote range is 15-30 feet. Replace remote cells before assuming the roof unit failed. Waterproof design does not help if the Type-C port is wet.
Charge first, because empty mimics every fault
An empty pack will not flash, will not answer a remote, and will not demonstrate a 20-second delay. Garage weeks and dirty panels are the usual cause. Type-C backup is the fast fill. Solar auto-charging is the slow fill after the face is clean.
8-12 hours of runtime is the full-pack night. Strobe shortens it. If the light died at midnight after an evening of strobe, that is budget, not a sensor failure.
Dry the Type-C port before plugging in. A wet port is a charge fault that looks like a dead product.
Light sensor: on only in darkness

If the unit is trying to run under a noon sky, the light sensor is covered, painted over, or confused by a deep shadow that looks like night. Wipe the housing. Move a cargo bag that sits on the puck. Do not park the diagnostic under a dense carport and call it daylight.
If the unit never comes on after dusk, the sensor may be flooded with stray light: a porch lamp, a bright sign, a snow reflection. Test on a dark street, not under a dealer canopy.
Vibration sensor: flash on night movement
The vibration sensor should flash when the vehicle moves at night. A parked test in a silent driveway will not trigger it. Roll a few feet. A washboard trail will trigger it often, which is correct for a moving outline.
If it never flashes, confirm darkness and a full pack first. Then confirm the remote has not locked a steady-off state. If it flashes all night while parked, look for a running diesel, a strong wind buffet, or a person loading the roof. The 20-second delayed shutdown only starts when movement stops.
A unit that never shuts down will be empty by morning. That is a sensing or mode issue, not a need for a bigger panel.
Remote: 15-30 feet, then the roof unit
Stand in the cab. Change color and mode. If nothing happens, replace remote cells, re-pair, and try again at 15-30 feet with a charged roof unit. A remote left in a tool drawer for a year is a dead remote.
Eight colors plus strobe, fade, and steady-on should all be reachable. If only one mode works, the remote may be sending a stuck command. Power-cycle the roof unit with a Type-C rest, then re-pair.

Can the remote be used from inside a metal garage?
Range is 15-30 feet in ordinary conditions. A closed metal building can shorten that. Step closer or open a door for the test.
